Richard Zimler, The Warsaw Anagrams

19-06-2020

Richard Zimler is a North American writer who chose Portugal, more specifically the city of Porto, to live since 1990. He taught Journalism classes at the University of Porto and obtained Portuguese citizenship in 2002.

The book The Warsaw Anagrams, 2009, is part of his vast work. The European students involved in the project read parts of this book and prepared the writer's visit to the Portuguese school during the mobility week. Some families of Portuguese students also got involved in reading this work and would be present on the 20th of march when the author was going to school for a conversation about the book and an autograph session.

The Warsaw Anagrams tells the story of Adam, a nine-year-old Jewish child who lives with his mother and a great uncle imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto in the fall of 1940. The way the narration transports us to that time and that space is overwhelming. We feel trapped and dragged by the tragic events of the family. Reading the book left the students silent!

We hope to be able to reschedule the writer's coming to school as soon as possible.
